MAANE KE HUM YAAR NAHIN

Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin
Lo Tay Hai Ke Pyaar Nahin
Phir Bhi Nazarein Na Tum Milaana
Dil Ka Aitbaar Nahin
It is human nature to find the bitterness in a relationship after its end, else to create it. But, this song is a plea to accept the relationship for what it was, as this rash thinking is only temporary.
At the same time, there’s no denial of the inevitable feeling of sinking one suffers after coming across their old love. (Phir bhi nazarein na tum milana, dil ka aitbaar nahin). I find that to be lovely, that there is aceptance of the vulnerability, yet a strong hold over reality and boundaries.
Raaste Mein Jo Milo Toh
Haath Milaane Ruk JaanaSaath Mein
Saath Mein Koi Ho Tumhare
Door Se Hi Tum Muskaana
The writer is asking his former lover to accept the past they’ve shared and at least dignify it with a handshake, if they ever meet. Here, the thought of him being with another person, a present commitment strikes the writer and there is another subtle request to just and smile as a form of acknowledgement.
Lekin Muskan Ho Aisi
Ki Jisme Ikraar Nahin
Nazron Se Na Karna Tum Bayaan
Woh Jis Se Inkaar Nahin
The writer continues to say that you can convey what you can’t deny through your eyes, the acceptance, the brief flash of all the memories and how they make you feel, should be shared just through the eyes and the smile shouldn’t hold any acceptance of all of these. My inerpretation here would be that the writer is just doing this as an act of care, so that the present companion isn’t unnerved by the dynamic at play here.
Phool Jo Band Hai Panno Mein Tum
Usko Dhool Bana Dena
Baat Chidhe Jo Meri Kahin
Tum Usko Bhool Bataa Dena
The flowers, closed between two pages turning to dust just signifies how old the relationship is, and how it materialized into nothing.
The writer continues to say that if she’s mentioned somewhere, he can admit that it’s a mistake. This is just beautiful acceptance of how circumstances can mold people and how there can’t be complete transparency, all the time. Yet, the mistake shouldn’t be accompanied with guilt or regret of any sorts. It’s a mistake which guided him, molded him, helped a part of him become what it is now and that should be accepted.
Lekin Wo Bhool Ho Aisi
Jis Se Bezaar Nahin
Tu Jo Soye Toh Meri Tarah
Ik Pal Ko Bhi Karaar Nahin
If, at night there is even a tiny resemblance to how the writer used to sleep, she knows he wouldn’t be able to sleep properly. She knows he remembers all the small details, the ones he used to adore and she knows it would leave him restless due to the small flutters of butterflies’ wings, which would churn up a huge storm of memories.
